Some call it a spiritual thing, a body thing, a soul thing... For those who know, the term brings back images of legendary NYC clubs like Studio 54, The Loft, and of late, "Body and Soul" at Vinyl and the current Shelter. It's a music based on New York's multicultural heritage - a mix of 70's disco and funk with deeper, blacker roots in gospel and soul, with Latin and Afro-Cuban rhythmic influences. Listening to it takes you from the cobblestone streets of Tribeca to rough-and-tumble Bronx to Spanish Harlem (El Barrio) and everywhere in between, evoking the bass notes of the city, ringing full of jazziness, deepness, and most of all, LIFE. New York House is best presented with no glamorous accoutrements. All it takes is an unadorned room, an intimate and inviting vibe, a proper sound system and a DJ who knows what he or she is doing. These days, New York House isn't defined so much by its city of origin as by the "vibe" that it represents. Which is why, from London to Tokyo, you will find groups of dedicated clubbers embracing this type of music. If you have any doubt, just check out a website like www.clubshelter.com and you'll see what we mean. DJ SL (劉軒) grew up in New York and has been collecting this type of music for over a decade. "I've more than once, at Body & Soul or the Shelter, been moved to tears along with hundreds of Blacks and Latinos, dancing with hands raised at the DJ's spiritual music. And when you have an experience like that, you'll never listen to dance music in the same way again." In the Living Room, he has finally found the right setting to play them. "I wanted a place with no pretensions." He said, "Because this music needs an open heart." It's also the perfect place for him to play New York House as it is often played – with live instruments and vocalists. One of a kind live DJ and saxophone jam, bringing together two old friends. Corbett Wall and DJ @llen sparked live experimental electronica fires 6 years ago at the now defunct Opium Den. The Taipei scene has changed dramatically since then. It will be interesting to see what they come up with now. 團員的話: Mobius is a happening new young band, and Living Room is proud to present them. They have a powerful and tight progressive punk sound, shadowed with both Japanese angst and London calling. Even though they are just starting, they play like a band, and are definitely not afraid to rock. (Bring your earmuffs...) The members of MOBIUS got together because they believed there was something else out there other than Mando-pop. We think so too! Definitely check these guys out.
